Daikanbo

DESCRIPTION

One of Kyushu's premier spots with breathtaking views and situation. Flying here is not regulated but it's a very good idea to go with some local flyers as soaring conditions are fickle, landings on the bottom are difficult, and winds frequently get strong and gusty.

ACTIVITIES

- paragliding
- soaring
- thermals
- xc

weather

Wind: https://de.windfinder.com/forecast/daikanbo Located at an altitude of 930m in topography with great relief, this is big air (at least for Kyushu). With light winds it's easy to get dropped, whereas strong winds can be gusty and the lift extreme, making it very difficult to topland or get away from the mountain.

access

From Kumamoto City, the capital of Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan, drive west about 40km to the Aso area. From the spa town of Uchinomaki iside the enormous caldera, drive north up the slope of the crater for 15 minutes to the Daikanbo Lookout.

regulation

None. In this way, the site is quite unique in Japan. It should be said that the site is right under the approach path of jetliners coming into nearby Kumamoto Airport. These fly overhead at 6500 feet, well within the soaring range of paragliders.
