Area is accessible by higher clearance vehicle due to the drive with uneven surface up the hill to Lookout Mountain. Can be accessed with lower clearance vehicle if parking and hiking before the switchbacks on the west side of Lookout Mountain and climb up the hill. There is a good turn around spot before the steepest section if climbing up the west side of Lookout Mountain and a need to reverse arises. The turn for Sand Wash Basin is well marked and can be found on Highway 318. Lookout Mountain is also accessible from the north and east on county road 4 which is paved.
