The Assistant Instructor module was conducted after participants had completed the required SIV and tandem components, ensuring that the group entered this phase with a strong technical foundation. From the first session, the focus was on developing instructional awareness, structured teaching habits, and clear communication methods aligned with APPI’s standards. The objective of this module was to guide candidates toward understanding not only how to fly correctly, but how to teach effectively, safely, and consistently.

Throughout the workshop, candidates were introduced to key teaching principles such as briefing and debriefing structure, identifying student errors, applying precise corrections, and managing the emotional dynamics of a student under stress. Particular emphasis was placed on timing, tone, and clarity of instructions—skills that are essential for any future instructor. These concepts were strengthened through real examples from the flying days, allowing participants to observe firsthand how correct communication directly affects safety and progression.

A significant portion of the training addressed human factors and the psychological aspects of flight instruction. Candidates learned how stress, misunderstanding of energy, or poor timing can influence a student’s performance, and how an instructor must interpret these signals and intervene at the right moment. Many participants expressed that this module reshaped their understanding of teaching, helping them see that effective instruction is a balance of technical knowledge, structured methodology, and emotional intelligence.

Attention was also given to equipment preparation and safety procedures. We covered proper harness setup, in-air positioning, rescue system adjustment, and the reasoning behind each step. These details are essential for any instructor, as they directly influence comfort, stability, and safety during training flights. The candidates showed steady improvement in recognizing and applying these standards throughout the course.

As part of the continuing development plan, I will return to Lebanon in February to complete the remaining Assistant Instructor examinations for the candidates who began their pathway during this workshop. In addition, we will hold a dedicated Instructor Workshop for a select group of experienced pilots—those who have been active for years, operate schools, or lead training programs. This second phase will allow them to progress toward APPI Instructor certification with deeper pedagogical training and higher-level methodology.

Overall, the Assistant Instructor workshop concluded successfully, with all participants demonstrating clear progress in communication, instructional mindset, and professional discipline. Their engagement and willingness to learn were evident throughout the sessions. I am satisfied with their development and confident that this foundation will continue to grow during the next phase of training in February, contributing to higher-quality instruction and safer learning environments within the APPI community.
